Podgorica Airport to Budva: taxi, transfer, and why there is no bus (2026)
In short
Podgorica Airport to Budva is about 60 km and takes 60–90 minutes — faster through the Sozina tunnel, prettier over Cetinje. There is no public transport from the terminal: only a taxi or a booked transfer. Taxis at the exit ask €50–95 per car depending on season and hour; through Budva Taxi App you send a request with a tariff estimate and the driver confirms the price before the trip. Agree a figure for the whole car, never per person.
- Distance and time: ~60 km, 60–75 minutes via Sozina, 80–90 minutes via Cetinje.
- Price: €50–95 per car at the terminal; pre-booked transfer €45–70; bus only from Podgorica bus station (7 km away), €6–7.
- The one rule: fix the price for the whole car before the luggage goes in.
How much is a taxi from Podgorica Airport
Prices per car (1–4 passengers, luggage included). “At the terminal” is what drivers at the stand asked for in passenger reports from summer 2026; “tariff in the app” is the local tariff calculation (flag-fall plus kilometres), refreshed hourly.
| To | km | min | At the terminal | Tariff in Budva Taxi App | Bus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budva | 59 | 108 | €50–95 | €106 | €6–7 from bus station |
| Bečići | 60 | 110 | €55–100 | €108 | €6–7 + local taxi |
| Sveti Stefan | 56 | 74 | €65–110 | €102 | €7–8 + local taxi |
| Petrovac | 46 | 61 | €55–95 | €84 | €6–7 from bus station |
| Kotor Old Town | 78 | 87 | €75–120 | €142 | €8–9 from bus station |
Intercity trips in Montenegro almost always run on an agreed price per car rather than the meter, so the tariff calculation in the app (roughly €1 per kilometre plus flag-fall) sits above what drivers quote at the terminal. In a request you see the tariff estimate and the driver confirms the price before the trip; you pay them directly, with no passenger commission.

Three real ways to leave (the bus is not one of them)
Podgorica Airport sits in open country 11 km south of the city, by the village of Golubovci. Not a single bus leaves from the terminal — not to the city, not to the coast. That is the one thing to know before you land: “I’ll take the bus” only works with a taxi to the bus station first.
Taxi at the terminal. The rank is right outside the arrivals exit and there are usually enough cars even for late flights. The driver quotes a negotiated price per car for the coast; summer and night quotes run higher. Bargaining is normal, but not below about €50 to Budva.
A request through Budva Taxi App. Enter the airport and your address, see the tariff estimate for the route and publish the request to registered drivers. The driver confirms the price and the pickup; you pay them directly in cash. For late flights, send the request before departure with your flight number.
A pre-booked transfer through an aggregator (Kiwitaxi, Welcome Pickups, GetTransfer, Suntransfers). Fixed price of €45–70 to Budva, card payment in advance, name board at arrivals. Good with children and luggage; the intermediary’s commission is inside the price.
The bus — only from Podgorica bus station, 7 km away (taxi €10–15). From there, buses to Budva run every 30–60 minutes from 05:30 to 21:00, ticket €6–7, 1 h 30 min. In total you spend nearly as much as a cheap transfer and arrive an hour and a half later.
Sozina or Cetinje: two roads to the coast
Via the Sozina tunnel. The main road: south from the airport towards Virpazar, a 4.2 km tunnel (toll about €2.50, normally included in the price), out at Sutomore and along the coast through Petrovac to Budva. 60–75 minutes, smooth, the least car-sick option.
Via Cetinje. The old royal road over the mountains: Cetinje, then a hairpin descent to Budva with the whole coast in view. 80–90 minutes, beautiful, but 25 hairpins — with children or after a night flight, take Sozina.
Tell the driver which road you want. The default is Sozina.
Step by step at the airport
One small arrivals hall. Inside: an ATM (euro), an exchange desk with a poor rate, car-hire counters, a SIM-card kiosk. Straight out of the exit is the taxi rank; to the left, the car park where transfer drivers and drivers accepting app requests wait.
An official taxi has a yellow TAXI roof sign and a plate beginning with TX. Name the town and ask the price for the whole car before you get in. If it does not suit you, the next car — the queue moves quickly.
- Bring small euro notes: Budva is usually €50–70 and drivers may not change €100.
- Photograph the plate and ask for a receipt (račun).
- If you are meeting a driver from a request, match the plate to the app — not just the name.
Arriving at night
Wizz Air and Ryanair rotations from the UK, and connections via Istanbul or Belgrade, often land after 23:00. Taxis are at the exit at night too, but quotes to Budva sit near the top of the range — €80–95. There are no buses of any kind and the bus station is closed.
A request sent through the app before departure, with your flight number, settles it: the driver confirms the pickup, waits if you are delayed, and you know the price in advance.
Payment: cash in euros
Montenegro uses the euro. Drivers take cash; card payment is the exception outside pre-booked transfers. UK cards work in the arrivals-hall ATM, so withdraw before you walk out.
Taxis and requests through Budva Taxi App are paid to the driver directly after the trip; the app takes no commission from the passenger and does not hold your money. Tipping is not expected — rounding up is enough.
How not to overpay
Podgorica has the same patterns as Tivat with one twist: the road is long, and “on the meter” is especially expensive here — €150–180 for 60 km on the night tariff.
- “On the meter.” Agree a sum for the car before you get in; intercity trips on the coast do not run on the meter.
- “Per person.” The quoted €25 is per passenger. Ask: “for the whole car to Budva?”
- “Tunnel extra.” The Sozina toll (about €2.50) should be inside the agreed price — confirm it up front.
- “Your hotel is far, I know a better one.” You have an address and a booking — go to it.
- Touts inside the hall. Official drivers wait at the rank outside.

Onwards: Budva, Bečići, Sveti Stefan, Petrovac, Kotor
Budva and Bečići — 60–70 km, 60–75 minutes via Sozina. Bečići is immediately beyond Budva; drivers know the package hotels by name.
Sveti Stefan and Pržno — about 80 km, 75–90 minutes, through Budva on the Adriatic Highway.
Petrovac — closest to the tunnel: 55–60 km and 50–60 minutes, cheaper than Budva.
Kotor — 90 km, about 2 hours via Budva. If you are staying in Kotor, compare fares into Tivat: Kotor is only 9 km from Tivat Airport.
Podgorica or Tivat: which to choose
Tivat is three times closer to Budva (21 km against 60) and ten times closer to Kotor. But Tivat is seasonal: from November to March only a handful of routes operate, while Podgorica runs year-round and takes the low-cost carriers — Wizz Air opened a base here in March 2026, Ryanair flies from Stansted.
Rule of thumb: in summer, with similar fares, fly to Tivat; in winter, or when Podgorica is €40–50 per person cheaper, fly to Podgorica — the taxi pays for itself for two people.
Flying from the UK
Podgorica is the year-round gateway: Ryanair from London Stansted, Wizz Air from several UK airports since its 2026 base opening, plus connections via Belgrade (Air Serbia), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, Pegasus) and Vienna (Austrian). In winter it is the only Montenegrin airport with daily international flights.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Podgorica Airport to Budva?
Drivers at the terminal usually ask €50–70 per car in daytime and up to €95 at night and in peak season. A pre-booked transfer is €45–70. Through Budva Taxi App you send a request with a tariff estimate and the driver confirms the price before the trip; you pay them directly with no commission.
How long does it take from Podgorica Airport to Budva?
About 60 km: 60–75 minutes through the Sozina tunnel, 80–90 minutes over Cetinje. On August evenings the approach to Budva can add time.
Is there a bus from Podgorica Airport to Budva?
No. Not a single bus leaves from the terminal. The nearest bus station is in Podgorica, 7 km away (taxi €10–15); from there buses to Budva run every 30–60 minutes from 05:30 to 21:00, ticket €6–7, about an hour and a half.
How do I get from Podgorica Airport into the city?
Taxi only (€10–15 to the centre, 15 minutes) or a booked transfer. There are no buses or trains from the airport; the Aerodrom railway halt 1 km away serves rare local trains and is not a practical option.
Is there Uber or Bolt in Montenegro?
No. Podgorica has a local app, TeslaGo; the coast has Budva Taxi App; otherwise taxis are called by phone or Viber/WhatsApp.
Which road — Sozina or Cetinje?
The Sozina tunnel: faster (60–75 minutes) and smoother. Cetinje is prettier but 20–30 minutes longer, with hairpins on the descent to Budva.
Can I pay for the taxi by card?
Almost always cash only, in euros. Withdraw at the ATM in the arrivals hall; UK cards work there.
How do I recognise an official taxi?
A yellow TAXI roof sign and a plate beginning with TX. The driver must issue a receipt.
Do I need to book a taxi in advance?
Not in daytime — there are cars at the terminal. At night, with children or heavy luggage, a request in advance removes the negotiation: the price is known and the driver waits if your flight is late.
Which airport is closer to Budva, Podgorica or Tivat?
Tivat: 21 km against 60. But Tivat is seasonal, while Podgorica runs year-round and takes the low-cost carriers; in winter most arrivals come through Podgorica.
